Dear St John the Apostle community,
Thank you for such an amazing term!
It's such a joy to be Principal at St John the Apostle and to watch each and every student grow and learn. Thank you for your collaboration and support in working together to create the best possible opportunities for every child who learns at our school.
Farewell
We farewell a few staff members this week. Mrs Neiberding has been a supportive, engaged and hard-working Inclusion Teacher. She has helped staff, students and families alike. We wish her the very best in her role as a teacher at SFX next semester. Thank you Mrs Neiberding. The new Inclusion Teacher will be announced in the school holidays through COMPASS.
Ms Olivia Etzrodt has been one of our highly valued Inclusion Assistants for several years. Olivia has been such a positive, kind and supportive presence through the school, working intensely with specific students and well as providing general student support in classrooms. We will miss Olivia's infectious happiness and we wish her all the best as she begins her new teaching career next term.
Return to school
Just a reminder that the first day of term will be Tuesday 18 July. Staff will undertake professional learning at school on Monday 17 July. The Front Office will be open for its usual hours on the pupil free day.
I wish everyone the very best of a well deserved holiday break and the opportunity to recharge as a family and school community. We look forward to many opportunities to support and celebrate your child's learning in Term 3.

NAIDOC Week
This week at St John's we celebrated NAIDOC Week. Students participated in a number of activities to expand their knowledge of NAIDOC week and Aboriginal culture and history. Mrs Tracey Gardner visited classrooms and discussed the follow topics with our students:
- Who are elders?
- Why are they important?
- How do we respect our elders?
- Who are some of our local elders in ACT?
- Explore kinship and what it means to our First Nations.
- Construct a family tree and identify their own elders.
- Discussion about well known elders and explore significant events in their lives, especially those that have impact on Indigenous Australians.
Students also completed a number of other activities in their classroom with their classroom teachers.
Johnny Huckle presented a whole school incursion. He is a renowned Aboriginal musician who has been performing for decades with his powerful songs.

What Students are Learning About
Yesterday, both Year 4 classes participated in a class mass with Fr Chung. The mass was a celebration of our friends. The students prayed for friends and family and those who take care of them each day.
Friendship is not based just on words but on actions. There are true and false friendships. Friends care for each other and trust each other. With a friend you can be yourself and know you are accepted. The commandment of love is the basis of friendship.
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other. John 15:12-17
Catholic Life and Reflection
Those who pray only when they feel like it are like fair weather friends who are not true friends, but only come around when it’s easy or when they want something from you.
There is always and everywhere time for a short prayer, when you get up, when you have breakfast, a cup of tea, when you are walking down the street, when you go to sleep.
“I don’t think there is anyone who needs God’s help and grace as much as I do. Sometimes I feel so helpless and weak. Because I cannot depend on my own strength, I rely on him 24 hours a day. My secret is simple: I pray. I love to pray. The urge to pray is always in me. Prayer enlarges the heart until it is ready to receive God’s gift of himself. If you want to pray better, pray more.” St Teresa of Calcutta
I have enjoyed my time as acting REC this term. I send a heartfelt thank you to the Executive team, Debbie and Leanne for their wonderful support and friendship whilst I was learning a new and challenging role. I am in awe of their stamina and the work these amazing people do every day! I wish everyone a restful and rejuvenating holiday. I hope parents enjoy time with their children and create many happy memories.

Thank you to Storytorch Press, who have kindly donated a book to each student from kindergarten to year 4. We hope the students enjoy reading them over the holiday!
What your child needs from you.
Parenting is one of those things we often think should just come ‘naturally’. We imagine we’ll be great at it (not like those family members who can’t seem to get it right!) and that our kids will turn out spot on. And then… we have kids.
Reality is painful for many of us. Parenting turns out to be harder than most of us imagined. We feel more tired. We have fewer answers, and the answers we thought we had don’t seem to work like we planned. We wonder if we’re too strict, too free-range, too gentle, too tiger, or too tired to care. We struggle with screens, feel burdened by boundaries, and feel like all we do is frown.
Yet parenting is also an incredible source of joy and happiness! How do we make it feel like that more often?
Join Dr Justin Coulson, the co-host and parenting expert on Channel 9s hit TV show, Parental Guidance, for some… well, extra special parental guidance! In this jam-packed, interactive, 90-minute webinar, you’ll discover:
- What every child needs from their parents in order to flourish
- Where parents are going wrong in their efforts to be the perfect parent
- How to get discipline right, even when everything’s going wrong, and
- Why joy in family life is easy to find… when you know where to look.
