NAIDOC Week

for_our_elders.jfif

This week at St John's we celebrated NAIDOC Week. Students participated in a number of activities to expand their knowledge of NAIDOC week and Aboriginal culture and history. Mrs Tracey Gardner visited classrooms and discussed the follow topics with our students:

  • Who are elders?
  • Why are they important?
  • How do we respect our elders?
  • Who are some of our local elders in ACT?
  • Explore kinship and what it means to our First Nations.
  • Construct a family tree and identify their own elders.
  • Discussion about well known elders and explore significant events in their lives, especially those that have impact on Indigenous Australians.

Students also completed a number of other activities in their classroom with their classroom teachers.

Johnny Huckle presented a whole school incursion. He is a renowned Aboriginal musician who has been performing for decades with his powerful songs.
