NAIDOC Week
This week at St John's we celebrated NAIDOC Week. Students participated in a number of activities to expand their knowledge of NAIDOC week and Aboriginal culture and history. Mrs Tracey Gardner visited classrooms and discussed the follow topics with our students:
- Who are elders?
- Why are they important?
- How do we respect our elders?
- Who are some of our local elders in ACT?
- Explore kinship and what it means to our First Nations.
- Construct a family tree and identify their own elders.
- Discussion about well known elders and explore significant events in their lives, especially those that have impact on Indigenous Australians.
Students also completed a number of other activities in their classroom with their classroom teachers.
Johnny Huckle presented a whole school incursion. He is a renowned Aboriginal musician who has been performing for decades with his powerful songs.
