School Focus and Positive Behaviour
The school positive behaviour focus this week was:
Cooperate with each other.
The school "Didge ya know?" fact this week was:
Yumalundi - (yoomaloondi) means: hello and welcome.
Dear St John the Apostle community,
It's lovely to be back and among the staff, students and families at school. I had a wonderful time on my Holy Land Pilgrimage as a group of 37, many of whom were Principals. I'm looking forward to sharing my journey and stories with students at school, bringing to life some of the places and events that they have often heard about through bible stories.
Thank you also to Belinda Clifford and Kellie Bradbury who organised the Mothers Day gifts that were ordered by families and sent home in your child's school bag today. There were over 240 gifts made by Belinda and Kellie for families.
Happy Mothers Day
Thank you to the Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two teachers for organising the Mother's Day Breakfast this morning. It was so lovely to see many of our mums enjoying a hot drink, pastries and fruit with their families. It was also lovely to see some of our grandmothers as well. I hope every one of our mothers, or those who enjoy a similar role, have a lovely celebration this weekend.
Have you enrolled for Kindergarten or Year 7?
We are in the midst of the 2024 Catholic Schools Enrolment Period and there are two more weeks until all Kindergarten and Year 7 enrolments for 2024 must be submitted. Our Year 6 Peer Leaders and School Captains hosted visiting families on Tuesday evening prior to our information night. We had an fantastic turn out and lots of interest in our school.
We still have the following opportunities for existing and prospective families:
- School Tours - Thursday 18 May, 4 - 5pm
- 1 to 1 tours with Mr Matthew Garton (Principal) - by appointment 22 to 26 May
If you know any families interested in enrolling their child at St John the Apostle please refer them to our website for how to enrol. If you have a child who is due to start in Kindergarten in 2024 we are currently accepting enrolments.
Please remember too that enrolments for Year 7 at SFX need to be submitted by Friday 26 May. Year 6 students are not automatically enrolled at SFX for Year 7.
A Playground Update
Yesterday many of our students enjoyed the new paths and gathering spaces in our recently landscaped playground area. There is a new basketball hoop for our younger students and fencing for the junior soccer area. There are also new raised decks beneath the trees in our eating areas and students are enjoying sitting on these to eat or playing on these mini-stages during recess and lunch.
This morning, prior to school starting, the sun was streaming through the trees and I couldn't help but take some photos to share.
Canteen
Some of our wonderful Year 6 students have started to open up the canteen on Tuesdays and Fridays at recess and lunch. They have a small menu that includes Jumpys, Harvest Snaps, Cheese and Biscuits, Quelch Bars and Fruit Filled Bars. The prices of the items vary from $1 to $2.50.
It's lovely to be back though I am looking forward to catching up on a little sleep this weekend. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

What Students Are Learning About
This week, Year 1 have been preparing to present ‘The Emmaus Story’ at our whole school prayer assembly.
Two of Jesus' friends were walking along the road to Emmaus.
Jesus met them. But they did not know it was Jesus. Jesus explained that his life, death and resurrection were God's loving plan.
By his life Jesus gave us the kingdom of God. By his death God forgave everyone for their wrongdoings. By his resurrection Jesus won life for us with God in heaven.
The two men saw that the stranger was no stranger all. When he broke the bread they realised it was Jesus. They were filled with joy.
Thank you to Miss McIver, Mr Doepel and Year 1 students for presenting this story with such reverence and imagination.
Catholic Life and Reflection
My favourite Psalm is 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God”. The Psalm calls us to take time to pause and reflect. It reminds us that God is still in control no matter what happens in our lives.
I went on a retreat a couple of years ago and was given a mug with the Psalm printed on it. When leaving the retreat, participants were encouraged to start each morning having a cup of tea of coffee with God. I find that the days I take the time to do this, I remember that God is all around me and with me. It might be in an amazing sunrise or even just something small and pretty in the garden that I’ve previously rushed past. The days that I take the time to “Be still and know that I am God” are the days that turn out to be the days that I am at my best. I carry that five minute of calm with me throughout the day in my interactions with others.

National Walk Safely to School Day
National Walk Safely to School Day
We are excited to be participating in the National Walk Safely to School Day!
Friday 19th of May
National Walk Safely to School Day aims to encourage students to be active and aware of road safety whilst walking to school.
During winter in Canberra, it can be hard to stay motivated to get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity that children need every day. National Walk Safely to School Day is the perfect way to encourage your children to become engaged in active travel to school, despite chilly mornings. So, let's rug up and get moving as we travel safely to school on Friday.
National Walk Safely to School Day - School Walk
On Friday 19th May we are having a National Walk Safely to School Morning.
Teachers will be meeting students at the following meeting points from 8am and start walking to school together from each location at 8:15am.
- Latham Shops - 15 Wanliss Street, Latham
- Florey Shops - Kesteven Street, Florey
- Scullin Shops - 1-9 Scullin Place, Scullin
Students and teachers will be welcomed to school with a drink, fruit, and muffin.
We hope to see lots of walkers and riders throughout the week but especially on our National Walk Safely to School Day this Friday.

And some people mourn Mother’s Day. It’s a day of difficulty. The pain of not having your own mum with you, the pain of having a mum who wasn’t safe, or even the pain of knowing you’re not doing great right now with your own kids (or don’t have any) can make the idea that we would celebrate seem insensitive.
Today, as we move toward Mother’s Day, our Insights article is about you… mum – and how you can get more out of Mother’s Day. The three ideas I share are designed for every mother, regardless of your approach to, and feelings about, Mother’s Day.
1. Get into ‘We’-Time vs ‘Me’-Time
Canadian researcher, Dr Elizabeth Dunn, has discovered that connection through time together (we-time) is associated with greater happiness than having time alone (me-time). The irony here is that on Mother’s Day (or other special occasions) there is often a pull towards that quiet bath, massage, or brunch without kids asking questions and getting in the way!
To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with having some me-time. In fact, sometimes it’s the only thing that provides the sanity you’re seeking. If you need it, take it.
But… once you’ve had that respite, jump back into being mum with both feet!
Close to a century of the very best research tells us that “Happiness is love, full stop.” And we experience that love through high quality connection: feeling seen, heard, and valued. Relationships where we feel seen, heard, and valued, are life-giving relationships. They elevate us. They build us. They sustain us.
This Mother’s Day, enjoy your moments of peace and indulgence. You deserve them. But make time for relationships where you and those around you feel seen, heard, and valued. Maybe you can pause and really ‘be there’ for your kids? Or perhaps they can dive in and give you that foot rub or back massage – or get into doing the dishes and folding clothes?
2. Savour
Being a mum is hard at times. It’s a long game! But studies show that being able to pause and really take in what’s happening around us might be one of the most direct pathways to happiness.
Sometimes that little bit of heaven that happens when you see your child (or children) smiling as you receive your gift from them, or feel their body squeezing up against you as they give you that hug, or even as you watch them eating brekky with you (after they’ve made something scrumptious as a treat!) is all it takes for the world to feel right again.
I know it’s a word you hear thousands of times a day/week/month, but have you closed your eyes and savoured the fact that there is a kiddo (or a family of them) who make it possible for you to have the special privilege of being called “Mum”?
3. Do Something For You
Ok, so I pushed the ‘we-time’ pretty hard. But this is your special day. Can you find an hour where you get to set the agenda? Maybe you take a walk, a bath, or some time to lie down and immerse yourself in a novel. Perhaps you can do some art or craft?
And yet, there’s the thing where “it’s Mother’s Day” and it’s nice to spend the time doing what you want, but with those humans who make you a mum. It could be that you take the family on a ride, a rainforest walk, or a sunset stroll.
Bonus idea: Make Mother’s Day Meaningful for Your Mum
The average woman in Australia lives to the age of 83. At the risk of saying something scary, the number of times you’ll say “Happy Mother’s Day” to your own mum is vanishingly small, and reducing each year.
Take this opportunity to say what needs to be said. Express love. Write a letter of gratitude and read it to her. Tell your mum why she’s your rock. Go one step further and tell her how she inspires you as a mum yourself. (And if things are strained, consider whether repairs can be made in meaningful ways. Small steps can make big differences). It’s possible that it might be the best Mother’s Day ever – because it’s (weirdly) not about you – but all about you!
An important note for husbands, partners, co-parents and kids
Hubby, partner, co-parent… this week it’s time to step up. Make an effort. Find a way to express the magic that you have in your life – and the unspeakable support you receive – as a result of this great woman in your life. Involve the kids. Support them in their efforts to honour their mum. Make it count. Create space for your kids’ mum to spend quality time with her children. Do the household chores she’d normally do so she can have that space to do what she wants most – be a present, available, connected mum to her children.
Happy Mother’s Day – from the Happy Families Team.
