Dear St John the Apostle families,
Happy Holidays!
This term has been the first term this year that we have spent the entire term at school, onsite. It has been fantastic, but all of the kids and staff are definitely ready for a holiday!
While I was narrating the End of Term Awards, I was struck by the many students who displayed a positive attitude and have grown in their learning. Not everyone recieved an award but I know there are many more students who could!
Today has been a wonderful way to end the term. I have spent the day in the hall watching movies and eating snacks with over 150 students across the school. It is always nice to celebrate the end of the term with the students who have consistently shown respect to themselves, others and the environment.
Thank you to everyone for following COVID safe practices this term and ensuring that everyone is safe in our community. We do miss having parents and other members of the community come into our school and be a part of our celebrations. We are continuing to come up with different ways to involve the wider community in what we are doing at school!
It is with pleasure that I announce that the following teachers received positions at St John’s for 2021.
- Allison Lock
- Serae Love
- Ellen Fletcher
- Sarah Collins
All of these wonderful teachers have had a positive impact on our community and we are excited to have them continue at our school. I would like to thank each one of these teachers for their contribution to the students and families at our school. We are very lucky to have them as teachers in our community!
I would also like to announce that Rebecca Neiberding (currently a teacher at St Thomas Aquinas) will be joining us on staff next year. We are very excited to have her as part of our staff and school community.
I sincerely wish everyone the most restful of holidays for the next two weeks.

What we have been learning about at St John’s?
This year each grade has been learning about the seven “I am..” statements of Jesus. John the Apostle also says: “I am a child of God.”
In the scripture from John 1: 12-13:
“To all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”
He tells us of God’s promise that anyone who receives Christ will be born again and will enter the family of God. This is a spiritual birth from God. To receive Jesus means to believe in His name and His name is who He is. Jesus is God as well as man. All who believe in Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour are given the right to be children of God. All who believe in the person of Christ are spiritually born of God. God transforms us from children of darkness and sin to His holy children.
When we accept Jesus as our Lord, and that Jesus paid our sin debt in full when he died for us on the Cross. The moment that we confess our sins and accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour we pass from death into life, from children of darkness into children of light. God gives the Holy Spirit to impart this new and holy life to His true children; the Holy Spirit comes to live in our physical bodies when we accept Jesus as our Lord.
Our new display in the foyer reflects that at St John’s we are all children of God. Pope Francis told a group of children on the autism spectrum that they are beautiful, unique flowers in the eyes of God. Pope Francis met with members of an Austrian centre for Autism, Sonnenschein (“Sunshine”), in an audience at the Vatican. He told them that the centre’s name evoked a flower-filled lawn in the sun “and the flowers of this house are you!” Speaking to the children, their parents and caregivers from the centre, Francis said: “God created the world with a great variety of flowers of all different colours. Each flower has its unique beauty. And each one of us is beautiful in the eyes of God, who loves us.” The following YouTube clip is of Pope Francis speaking to the members from the centre.
Sacrament of Holy Communion
A few weeks ago, some of our Year 3 students made the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This week each of our Year 3 students received a beautiful framed print of their I am statement – “I am the bread of life.”.
Congratulations
Two of our lovely St John’s mum’s made their own Sacraments last weekend. Jenny Wheatley (mum of Mason 3B) made the Sacrament of Baptism at the St John the Apostle Church.
Rebecca Neiberding (mum of Emily 4B, Sophie 3B and Katie KM) made the Sacrament of Confirmation at the St John the Apostle Church.
Congratulations to you both and may God always be in your life so that you have someone to lean on as you grow, learn, and become who you are meant to be.
Have a happy and safe holiday
God bless,

Notices from the Parish
Happy birthday to Miranda T, Willow O, Elizabeth D, Meloni C, Matilda P and Jacob H who all celebrated a birthday over the last week.
Please note that we ask students to not bring home made cupcakes to share with the class for their birthdays. This is a precautionary measure for health and hygiene. The Canteen offers a number of options to share with the class. Purchases can be made through the QKR app.
Congratulations to the following students who received the End of Term Awards.

To: Parents and Carers of Students in Catholic Schools
Re: ACT Election
Dear Parents and Carers
In the lead up to the 2020 ACT Election, the Catholic Education Commission of Canberra and Goulburn endorsed three policy priorities for all parties to consider related to:
- Equitable School Funding
- Fund Catholic schools at 25% of the per-student cost of education in an ACT Government school.
- Land Release and Planning
- Make land available for new Catholic schools.
- Improve planning policies to include new Catholic schools.
- Support for Catholic Early Learning Centres
- Provide financial support to Catholic Education Early Learning Centres to support equitable access and construction of new centres.
Our priorities are designed to ease cost-of-living pressures of families, ensure that Catholic schools can continue to be affordable and accessible, and serve the needs of families.
Catholic school communities have been advocating for these priorities over the past six months, hosting visits from the Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, Opposition Leader, Alistair Coe, and every MLA who is contesting the 2020 ACT Election. We have also provided detailed education policy briefings to both ACT Labor and the Canberra Liberals, and met with the Greens.
Recently, Alistair Coe and the Canberra Liberals committed to supporting our funding and land release policy priorities. The Liberals plan supports families, while also committing to a review of the curriculum in the ACT. You can find information regarding the Canberra Liberals education policy commitments here.
ACT Labor has decided not to support the most important of our policy requests. Continuing with a policy of cutting school funding will inevitably put upward pressure on school fees. Labor has committed to continue capital improvement grants to non-government schools, and announced equity grants to support disadvantaged families. You can find information regarding ACT Labor’s policy commitments here.
Similar to Labor, the Greens are not supporting our funding commitment but support the proposed land release for non-government schools. The Greens have stated their priorities as providing ‘nature-based’ play spaces for older schools, sustainability upgrades, and infrastructure available to all schools.
It would assist Catholic schools if you could encourage all candidates in your electorate to adopt the policy priorities of Catholic Education. I have attached both a fact sheet and education report and that may be useful for any conversations you have with candidates.
Together, we can ensure that supporting your children and Catholic schools is a priority for the next ACT Government.
Good wishes
Ross Fox

Encourage kids to occupy themselves
A child’s ability to fill in their own time and cope with moments of boredom are important independence skills to develop. Children have less practise at keeping themselves occupied than those of past generations. You have many jobs as a parent, but constantly entertaining your child, should not be one of them. These ideas will help:
Invite them to keep themselves busy
When your child tells you that he or she is bored they are bringing you a problem to solve. Boredom is your child’s problem, not yours. If this happens, encourage your child to keep themselves busy by asking questions such as “How can you keep yourself amused?”
Make a list
If your child is stuck for ideas make a list of activities that they can refer to when they’re bored. Include a variety of activities such as creative tasks, performance tasks, crafts, sports, indoor and outdoor games, music activities, reading and helping. Place the list in a convenient place with easy access and visibility.
Make a boredom buster jar
Cut up a list of boredom busting activities and place them in a jar. When your child is stuck for an idea to keep him or herself amused invite them to select an activity from the boredom buster jar. Ask your child to add enjoyable activities to the jar over time.
Encourage plenty of green-time
Today’s children spend more time in front of screens, and less time outdoors than those of previous generations. Not only is time spent in natural environments refreshing, relaxing and rejuvenating, but It’s also a wonderful way for kids to relieve boredom. Encourage your child to spend some of their free time outside in natural environments to promote good mental health and develop their confidence.
Help find their interests
If your child struggles to keep him or herself occupied, consider helping them identify a hobby or interest that they enjoy. Often finding that one activity a child loves or excels in makes a huge difference to their self-esteem and wellbeing, and can become the driver for future career choice.
Build in downtime
A trait common among healthy families is the propensity for everyone to enjoy spending downtime or unstructured time together. It’s during downtime that parents and children share activities together, which promotes better relationships and helps children’s informal learning.
Most children when given unstructured time will rise to the occasion (even after some complaining) and will find interesting things to do. By encouraging them to find something “to do”, other than filling their time with screen-based activities, you are promoting a fabulous life-skill in your kids.
