Catholic Life and Reflection
What Students Are Learning About
The beginning of Lent is always an important part of our Church year. This year our focus for lent as a school is Pray, Fast and Give.
Year 5 led us in a prayerful and reflective Ash Wednesday Liturgy that included this reflection.
Year 4 have began their fasting by thinking about what their Lenten promise is going to be. We decorated envelopes and then popped our promise inside. We don’t share with anyone what our promise is, we just pray on it and give it to God. They are sitting at our classroom prayer table.
Catholic Life and Reflection
As an adult Ash Wednesday holds a lot more meaning than it did when I was younger. I find it quite a powerful and moving experience to give and receive the ashes. I really love is seeing all the students with the cross on their foreheads following our celebration as they continue to play, run and climb. It reminds me that Jesus is always with us. Sometimes we forget that, but Jesus doesn’t.
So, as the students were having recess, after our liturgy, some of them came up to me very excited to share what they thought was a crucifix shaped hole in the clouds! They told me God was sending them a message of hope and love. I agree!
Finally, as we are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, it has become a tradition that the staff order fish and chips for lunch. We enjoy the opportunity to share a yummy meal together and honour the sacrifice Jesus made by a small sacrifice of our own.
May your Lenten season be filled with peace that is enhanced by prayer.

God bless,
Steph Stewart
