School Focus and Positive Behaviour
The school positive behaviour focus this week was:
Right place, right time, right task.
Ngunnawal word of the week:
Garid (means 'rain')
Dear St John's families,
There is still a lot of Covid going around our school at the moment and we really appreciate families getting on to it quickly, keeping children home when they are sick. It helps to minimise any spread. Thank you.
Community Council 2024
Thank you to those who attended our Community Council AGM on Wednesday evening. We're excited to begin the work of enhancing our community relationships, supporting the learning of our students and positively contributing to our story in the wider community.
Our next meeting is Wednesday 3rd April (Week 10) at 6.00pm. If you are interested in being part of the Community Council or supporting the work of the Community Council then please feel free to contact me (Matthew.Garton@cg.catholic.edu.au) or email the Community Council (sjapscommunitycouncil@gmail.com) to let us know. We welcome the input of all community members.
School Uniform Update
A request was made to the Community Council last year to reintroduce skorts as
an option for the summer uniform. Our wonderful parent volunteers in the Community Council are pleased to tell you that these are now available.
Skorts are a combination skirt/short and are now available from the Uniform Shop to be worn as part of the 'everyday uniform' and not the 'sports uniform'.
So during Terms 1 and 4 students now have the option of:
- summer dress OR
- skorts and crested sky blue polo top OR
- shorts and crested sky blue polo top
All sizes are available at a price of $27.
Second Hand Uniforms
As a parent of four, I loved hand-me-downs from other families in the school or between siblings. Children can get very dirty playing at school and they can also quickly outgrow their uniforms. Second hand uniforms were well received in our house.
Many of our families have been accessing the second-hand uniforms in our Uniform Shop. The stock has become a little thin and we're looking for more second-hand uniforms items.
If you have any clean, intact second-hand uniforms in your cupboards that are no longer useful to you please consider giving them one last wash and dropping them off at the uniform shop or Front Office so that other families can benefit too. Not only is it a way to be kind to our planet, you can make a significant difference to other families in our community.
Parent-Teacher Interviews
Have you booked? Bookings close this Sunday at 8.00pm.
Please take the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher for a short, focused conversation and to receive their progress report.
While K-2 parents can meet alone with the teacher, we ask that Year 3-6 students come along with their parents so that the conversation between parent, child and teacher ensures a shared understanding of how the year has started and what can be achieved in the year ahead.
It's always a positive conversation and a great way to start the year well.
God Bless,
Matthew Garton

Child Protection and Safeguarding
One of my roles at St John's is the Child Safe Advocate. As a Child Safe Advocate, my role is to lead our school's safeguarding approach in alignment with the Child Safe Standards, support our school with any child safety concerns, oversight compliance with any legal requirements and provide leadership and support to school staff in child protection related matters.
Throughout the year, I will write in the newsletter about topics concerning child protection and safeguarding and how we can work together to ensure the protection and safety of all of the children in our community. You will see below Catholic Education's commitment to safeguarding our children.
Safeguarding our students...
The safeguarding of our students is the top priority of our schools and the Catholic Education Office.
Safeguarding is a term used to describe the protection of and human rights of vulnerable people. This may be due to their age, culture or trauma background, or they may be at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation.
Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn is committed to complying with Child Safe Standards.
Child Safeguarding Commitment
Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn is committed to keeping children safe in all schools. We have adopted the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Child Safeguarding Commitment, which states:
Our Safeguarding Approach
Our approach to child safeguarding is outlined in our Child Safety Policy. This policy includes the CECG Commitment Statement, the many aspects of child safety, how we ensure young people are safe, and our compliance with the Child Safe Standards.
Our approach to child safety may be visualised as a ‘web’ or curriculum, with many aspects linking together to contribute to its strength. As a child safe organisation, we strive to understand and follow our legal obligations, use contemporary safeguarding practices and involve all stakeholders – particularly children and families – in safeguarding functions.
Our Legal Obligations
As a child safe organisation we are required to comply with the Child Safe Standards, the Mandatory Reporting requirements for children in the ACT and NSW, the working with children/vulnerable person schemes and, in the ACT, the Senior Practitioner Scheme.
Parents and carers as partners
We see parents and carers as partners in their children’s educational journey, experience and safeguarding. It is important for us to work together collaboratively to respond to safeguarding concerns, subject to the involvement of other agencies, including child protection and police.

What Students are Learning About
Year 4 have learnt the different ways that they can fast, pray and give during lent and have made personal commitments during this season.
Catholic Life and Reflection
As I left work the other night one leaf was on the ground that showed the beautiful colours of autumn. These hot days don’t really feel like autumn weather yet, but I know it is coming.
The older you get the more you realise that life is change. Sometimes change creeps up on you (ie wrinkles in the mirror, where did they come from??) and sometimes it is so slow that it is hard to notice.
I embrace the change now. As much as possible, I go with the flow, rather than try to fight it. I breath, I accept and do what I can. I have found the solace of prayer so helpful in the past few weeks. I have prayed when the urge has struck me. Even in the middle of a spelling mastery lesson a few days ago ?
As we move through this season of Lent notice the change around you. Notice the change in you and celebrate it for the learning, passion and growth it brings.
God bless.Notices from the Parish
Happy birthday to Alexa C, Julia T, Sarah O and Samuel H who all celebrated a birthday over the last week.
This year we will be presenting a number of awards to students. Please see below the scedule for this term. Most awards will be handed out on a Thursday morning.
At St John the Apostle we teach a number of programs that focus on mastering particular knowledge and skills in literacy and numeracy. Students are taught based on their individual, current level of mastery. Two of the programs we teach are Spelling Mastery and Rocket Maths. We regularly collect data from students in both of these programs so we can track that they are having continous progress. Students work hard to achieve mastery in these programs, so we celebrate the students who show mastery in these programs by giving them awards.
Students will receive Spelling Mastery Awards once they reach mastery three times at their Spelling Mastery level. For some students this is 10/10 and for others it is 25/25. For Kindergarten students will receive Spelling Mastery Awards when they receive 10/10 for each unit they complete in Sounds~Write.
Students will receive Maths Mastery Awards each time they beat their Rocket Math Two Minute Goal.
This year we will also be presenting Brag Tag Awards. These will be handed out each time a student receives 20 brag tags.

Donations
Tombola
For the 2024 Fete, we are doing Tombola a little differently. We are asking that a full jar is donated. In the past, we have asked for empty jars and the Store Convenor has filled the jars. The items also don’t need to be in a jar. They could be in a zip lock bag, a plastic container or anything that is enclosed and we can stick a raffle ticket on.
Items that can be put in the tombolar jars/containers:
- Lollies and chocolates
- Jar of trinkets - small toys, erasers, stickers, hair accessories, craft supplies, stationary etc.
Hampers
We are asking that each child in each year group, donates one or more items for the below hampers. Each year level has been allocated a theme. If Kindergarten students would like to donate an item, they can choose any theme. Please see below images of past hampers.
Year One - Baby hamper (e.g. wraps, clothes, nappies, rattles, baby toys, wipes etc.)
Year Two- Pet Hamper (eg. pet toys, treats, feeders, bowls etc.)
Year Three - Kids Toy hamper (e.g. puzzles, fidget toys, board games, balls etc.)
Year Four- Pamper hamper (eg. bath salts, candles, body products etc.)
Year Five - Parents hamper (eg. wine, beer, chocolates, nuts etc.)
Year Six- Home hamper (eg. tools, cleaning products, Bunnings gift card etc.)
Books
We will be having a book stall. We would love donations of books to sell at the Fete. These can be picture books, children and adult novels, recipe books etc.
Lucky Lock
We will be having a Lucky Lock competition again for the 2024 Fete. An esky is filled with wine and beer and locked with a padlock. We sell keys and one key opens the lock. This lucky person wins the esky and its contents. To run this competition, we would love donations of the following:
- Wine, beer etc.
- Old keys that are no longer useful
Kind regards,
Fete Committee

In primary school it was bike rides, cubby houses, climbing trees, playing marbles, jumping on the trampoline, and being outside – always outside… and it was almost always with my best buddies: Andy Lucas, Ben and Jay Walter, Richard and Ian Duddy (I’ve never done a shoutout to my old buddies before…but here it is, after so many years).
In my teens, it was ultra – long bike rides (of 50 kms or more – that was a lot for a 15-year-old who wasn’t a cyclist), surfing, skateboarding, and exploring the bush in the mountain behind my house.
I was lucky to grow up in the 80s.
It was probably the last decade where kids had the sort of freedom that I had. With every decade since, research shows that children have become more restricted, more structured, and less able to play and explore in their neighbourhoods away from adults. It’s well documented that the amount of time available to kids for free play is declining.
Unfortunately, that’s not the only thing that has changed since the 80s.
In 1980, less than 10 in 100,000 teen boys died by suicide, and for girls it was only 2 in 100,000.
By 2000, it had increased to 13 in 100,000 for teen boys and 6 in 100,000 for teen girls.
While in 2020, the number of suicides among teen girls remained steady, for our teen boys it jumped again to 17 in every 100,000.
Behind those stark numbers is the equally alarming doubling in the prevalence of anxiety and depression in our teens and young adults over the last 15 years.
Why?
Screens are the most commonly-blamed culprit. While the scientists behind this argument make a compelling argument, there are alternative explanations. One is that parents are more controlling than ever before. A related idea is that children don’t get to play anymore.
I’m not the only one who believes that the decline in free play is a contributing cause. Kids are constantly being pulled away from the opportunity to engage in real life, physical (and outdoor) play because:
- Screen-based activities entice kids away from the outdoors.
- Parental concerns about safety leads to restricted opportunities for independent exploration.
- Many children find their afternoons and weekends filled with structured activities such as organised sport and extracurricular activities, leaving little time for unstructured play.
- The focus on academic achievement and structured learning means that most of our kids’ time is spent either in school, doing homework, or engaging in other adult-directed activities, dramatically limiting the time available for free play.
The problem with reducing play time is that play is a direct source of happiness for our children. Studies show that kids prefer outdoor play with friends to screen based activities, and outdoor play is consistently ranked by parents as the activity that makes their kids the happiest – if we can get them to do it!
What exactly is it about play that has such a big impact on wellbeing?
Play satisfies all of our basic psychological needs. By definition, play is self-directed. Play is the vehicle through which kids build skills. Play is how children make friends.
As parents, how can we give our children the freedom to play?
- Strengthen autonomy – allow our kids more choice in how they spend their time. Cut back on structured extracurriculars to enable them more time for free play. Move away from adult-directed activities to unsupervised play (as developmentally appropriate).
- Build competence – set up the environment with equipment for open ended play. Open Ended toys build competence because there is no right way to use them, and the materials can be modified to meet the level of play that your child is ready for.
- Relatedness – build a community of people your kid can play with easily. Things like introducing your family to other families in the neighbourhood is a great start.
Giving our kids an idyllic childhood with freedom to play and explore isn’t just good for them now. It helps them build the resilience they need for healthy adulthood too.
